Pearl Schwartz White was born in St. Louis and taught in the St. Louis public schools her entire teaching career.
She received her B.A. from Stowe Teachers' College and an M.A. in education from Teachers' College at Columbia
University, New York. She was a member of many professional and educational organizations, including: the National
Educational Association; Missouri State Association of Negro Teachers; Missouri State Teachers' Association;
Retired Teachers' Association; American Association of Univerisity Women; the Association for the Study of Negro
Life and History; and American Women in Radio and Television. President of the Missouri State Association of Negro
Teachers, 1944-1946, she considered the merger of the Missouri State Teachers' Association (all white) and the
Missouri State Association of Negro Teachers in 1948 one of her greatest achievments. She founded Zeta Sigma, the
graduate chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho in 1932 in St. Louis. In 1963, she began broadcasting Open Road
on KATZ radio, an informative, weekly show sponsored by Zeta Sigma.
