Mary Anne Sell was born September 18, 1942, into a well-to-do St. Louis family. She attended Villa Duschesne High School and , from age 14 to 17, kept social calendars and diaries in which she described her dates, high school events, social outings and family affairs. Mary Anne led an extremely active social life. Her friends came from such prominent families as the Desloges, Dooleys, Duchesnes, icks, McMahons, and Stanleys. The diaries record buffet suppers, ice skating parties, horseback riding, cotillions, and summer trips to Michigan. Throughout this period, she frequently dated Tom Dooley. Many entries provide detailed coverage of his high school activities.

Two diaries (1941-42 and 1943) and three "Social Capers" calendars (1942, 1943, 1944) of Mary Anne Sell, a high school student at Villa Duchesne. Entries describe social outings, friends, and dates, including those with Tom Dooley.
