In 1903 chemists and those working in the growing chemicals industry in St. Louis met and founded a society to discuss their interests, increase their knowledge and "foster good friendships". It was generally considered that this new society was to be a section of the American Chemical Society (founded in 1834) but opposition to this arose, and the St. Louis Chemical Society was organized with 57 members at the first meeting on February 3, 1903.
Before the founding of the new chemical society, the Western Academy of Natural Sciences (founded in 1837) and the St. Louis Academy of Science (founded in 1856) served as forums for presentation of papers on chemical subjects.
One of the reasons for the chemists to organize themselves was the impending Louisiana Purchase Exposition which was to be held in 1904 in St. Louis at which many famous American and European chemists would have exhibits. The St. Louis Chemical Society set up information stations and aided exhibitors. At a gala banquet representatives of the local chemical industry included the American Car Foundry, Laclede Gas, Carmer Dry Plate, Sligo Furnace, Lambert Pharmaceuticals, Mallinckrodt, Merck, United Zinc, and Meyer Bros., as well as representatives from St. Louis University, Washington University and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
In 1907 the St. Louis Section of the American Chemical Society was organized. The territory of the section was to include a radius of 125 miles in Missouri and 25 miles in Illinois. Until 1911 the two chemical societies met together for their scientific meetings, when the St. Louis Chemical Society was disbanded.
A comprehensive history of the American Chemical Society St. Louis Section has been written by Dr. Jane A. Miller, Department of Chemistry, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and may be found in Box 15, folder 149 of the papers.
