SCOPE AND CONTENT
This collection documents hazards posed by nuclear waste dumping in the town of Hematite, in Jefferson County, Missouri. Hematite housed the oldest commercial uranium–fuel processing plant in the country, built by Mallinckrodt Chemical Works in 1956. It produced nuclear fuel rod assemblies for commercial power plants and at one time was approved to process plutonium. Owners of the property that succeeded Mallinckrodt included Gulf United Nuclear Corporation; Combustion Engineers, Inc.; Ace Brown Bowen (ABB); and Westinghouse/British Nuclear Fuel LTD.
The plant’s property included forty earthen pits containing radioactively contaminated material. When constructed, no effort was made to prevent leaks from these pits, which contained paper, plastic and wood items as well as metal, possibly including a pick-up truck. A worker at the Hematite plant testified to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 1985 about his suspicions that leaks from these pits may have contaminated nearby Joachim Creek. The NRC found no evidence for the charge.
Westinghouse bought the plant in 2000 and closed it in the summer of 2001, consolidating operations in Columbia, SC. At the same time, chemical contaminants were found in the well water of residents’ homes more than a half mile south of the plant. Additionally, contaminants surfaced in well water northeast of the facility. Although Westinghouse had charcoal filters installed on the contaminated property of Jerry and Claire Eaton, filed a lawsuit against Mallinckrodt on August 5, 2002 seeking payment for their contaminated property so that they could relocate.
As of July 7, 2011, the NRC had scheduled hearings on the decommissioning of the Hematite plant. In October 2011 the decommissioning project completed preparations to excavate low-level radioactive material and buried waste in from the forty pits. It also determined that as many as 25 additional pits may have been constructed prior to those already documented. According to a Westinghouse newsletter, the work was scheduled to begin during December 2011.
