Mary Spotswood Nisbet Matthews 1861

The Mary Spotswood Nisbet Matthews Journal selection is a transcription of Mary’s journal during her 1865-1866 trip through Europe and the Middle East. On November 30, 1865, Mary began her journey with her husband, Leonard Matthews, and her sister, Nora, leaving behind her two small children. Experiencing the difficulties of travel without the benefit of travel agents, Mary chronicles the places they saw and the people they met. All grammatical errors, misspellings, and typographical errors have been maintained from the original document. This trip is also mention in Leonard Matthews’ A Long Life in Review.
