Mrs. Lucy M. Chambers Dies; Was 91 Years Old

Mrs. Lucy Matthews Chambers, widow of William Lionel Chambers, a St. Louis lawyer and business man, died of a cerebral hemorrhage yesterday at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was 91 years old and lived at Gatesworth Manor, 245 Union boulevard.

Mrs. Chambers was born in St. Louis, the daughter of Leonard Matthews, an investment broker. She was a graduate of Mary Institute and the New York Art Students’ League. She was an amateur painter and her works had been exhibited at the Artist Guild, of which she was a member. She was a founder of the St. Louis YWCA.

Surviving are a son, William Nisbet Chambers, chairman of the Washington University history department; a daughter, Mrs. William Edward Wiese of Kirkwood; a brother, Claude Levering Matthews, and five grandchildren. Her husband died in 1928. A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Gatesworth Manor chapel. Private burial will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
