The
A Long Life in Review selection is a transcription of Leonard
Matthews' autobiography privately published in 1927. At the age of 87,
Leonard began to write his autobiography at the request of his children.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1828, Leonard traces his journey to St.
Louis. Leonard reflects on events including farm life, the California
Gold Rush, the Civil War, and traveling abroad. He also discusses social
customs, technology, and child rearing. A Long Life in Review
offers a vivid portrait of St. Louis at the turn of the nineteenth century.
