The marriage of Miss Elvira Houston and Mr. Leonard Matthews, Jr., took
place last evening at the home of the bride on Maryland avenue. The ceremony
was performed at 8 o’clock by Rev. H. H. Gregg. The bride was attended
by Mrs. Connor Witherspoon as matron of honor and Misses Martha Sproule,
Mary Semple and Lucy Matthews as bridesmaids. Mr. Will Matthews was best
man for the groom.
Miss Houston was given away by her father. She wore a gown of white chiffon
and thread lace, en train. The tulle veil, which fell to the end of the
train, was held in place by a spray of orange blossoms, and she carried
a shower bouquet of lilies of the valley. The matron of honor wore white
silk, en princesse, trimmed with cascades of soft lace and touches of
delicate pink. She carried pink carnations. The bridesmaids were similarly
gowned, with the exception that their toilets had touches of palest blue
instead of pink. The skirts of all were en demi train, and pink carnations
were carried. After the ceremony there was a reception, when friends of
bride and groom were present to offer congratulations. The house was decorated
throughout with white and green. Mr. and Mrs. Houston and Mrs. Forrest
Ferguson helped in receiving. Mrs. Houston wore a handsome all-white toilet
of lace and imported gauze. Mrs. Ferguson wore a French creation of rose
point lace, en princesse, falling over an accordion-plaited chiffon and
white silk slip. The corsage was low and filled in with lace. A suit of
superb old family pearls completed the whole.
Mr. and Mrs. Matthews did not disclose
the destination of their honeymoon tour, but upon their return to St.
Louis they will be at home to friends during April at 4538 Maryland avenue.
