Body to Lie in State at Undertaking Establishment.
Funeral services for Percy Werner, St. Louis attorney,
civil leader and connoisseur of the arts, who died of cardiac nephritis
at his home, 5505 Cates avenue, Sunday night, will be at Valhalla Crematory
at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon. Until shortly before the service,
the body will lie in state in an undertaking establishment at 4449 Olive
street. He was 71 years old.
Mr. Werner is survived by four sons, Howard, W.
Courtney, Leonard Matthews and Saunders Norvell Werner, and two daughters,
Mrs. Trifon von Schrenk and Miss Virginia Werner. Mrs. Werner, who died
in 1915, was formerly Miss Nina Matthews, a daughter of Leonard Matthews,
whose 100th birthday was celebrated last December. Two sisters also are
living.
In addition to his distinguished career in law,
during which he served chiefly as advisory counsel for corporations, Mr.
Werner was a lecturer upon legal ethics at the Washington University School
of Law and had a wide range of public interests.
He was one of the organizers of the Arbitration
Society of Missouri, formed to settle civil difficulties out of court
and reduce litigation costs, and was secretary-treasurer of the group.
He contributed frequently to legal journals, his
favorite theme being industrial arbitration.
An early member of the Artists’ Guild, he
took part frequently in its dramatic productions. Only his intimates knew
he was an accomplished pianist. He traced his ancestry to the great composer,
Sebastian Bach.
