Welcome to the Gemini Virtual Exhibit Website. I hope you enjoy browsing this site as much as I enjoyed working on it! All of the Mercury and Gemini space capsules were built by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri near Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Gemini was the second phase of NASA's space program in the 1960s. Prior to Gemini, Mercury (one man crew) was responsible for putting manned capsules in earth orbit. The Gemini program (two man crew) launched 10 manned missions between 1965-1966, with the intent to push human endurance in space and practice rendezvous operations with other spacecraft. Rendezvous and docking operations proved essential to the Apollo (three man crew) missions which followed Gemini. Apollo's ultimate objective--landing a man on the moon--became a reality on July 20, 1969. The initial inspiration for this website stemmed from our collection of unresearched Gemini 12 photographs. WHMC's 250 photos were donated to us by Arthur Witman on August 27, 1984. Witman, a photographer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch specialized in local/regional stories and pioneered the use of 35mm cameras in news photography. |
