THE JOURNEY
Dwight Davis, Dr. Dooley, and Earl Rhine
meet in Hawaii to travel together
to Muong Sing, Laos

Rhine and Davis left the U.S. in July 1958. They had a long journey from America to Muong Sing, Laos. First, they flew to Hawaii in July 1958, where they met Dr. Dooley. The three then flew to Japan, Hong Kong, and then to Saigon, Vietnam. From Saigon, they drove a jeep 1600 miles across Southeast Asia to Cambodia, and then to Bangkok, Thailand. They finally arrived in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, on September 14, 1958. On September 15, Dooley received word from the Prime Minister that Dooley was officially permitted to go to Muong Sing to establish a hospital.

At Vientiane, they loaded a transport plane with medical supplies and flew to Muong Sing, Laos, a village of 4,000 people. Rhine and Davis stayed in Muong Sing while Dooley went back to Vientiane to facilitate the transport of other medical supplies to Muong Sing. Rhine and Davis patched the roof, hung doors, and cemented the floors of the buildings that served as their home and the hospital. When Dooley returned to Muong Sing with the last of the supplies, Rhine and Davis had the house in a livable condition and the hospital almost ready for use. They eventually had their house, the clinic, and the ward connected by thatch-covered walkways.
