DOOLEY'S EFFORT TO AID THE WAR

          Also, during his time with the "Passage to Freedom," 1954-1955, Dooley was known as a morale booster. He gave speeches on several different ships to educate the sailors about the Vietnamese and their situation in an attempt to explain to the sailors why they were in Vietnam.

          Dooley provided information that reached the American Catholic community in support of Ngo Dinh Diem as the leader of Vietnam. His information appeared in Catholic papers in America.

          Dooley helped further the propaganda of American aid to Vietnam, which the U.S. used as an example of America helping another free country keep its freedom.

          Dooley took pride in his efforts working with refugees in Vietnam. He wanted it publicized so that the people in St. Louis would see his accomplishments. He helped America portray to the world its role in keeping Vietnam free and helped gain American support for aid to Vietnam.

          President Diem recognized Dooley for his work in Vietnam and American papers published Diem's recognition of Dooley.
