The
Bolton-Cutter Award in Borderlands History
A cash prize of $500 will be awarded annually for the best article on any phase of the history of the Borderlands, from the Floridas to the Carolinas, from the sixteenth century to the present, including the northward movement of Spanish-speaking people into the United States in recent times, major political, economic, and social developments, cultures, peoples, institutions, and movements, broad essays of synthesis or new interpretations. Articles will be judged on scholarship and literary style. If the judges find no manuscript worthy of the prize, no prize will be given that year. Any WHA member, as well as the publisher or author of the essay, may nominate an essay. A copy of the journal, an offprint, or a photocopy must be submitted to each member of the committee with a letter of recommendation (see below). Award-winning articles in languages other than English will be considered for publication in the Western Historical Quarterly. To be eligible for the award in 2009, the article must have been published in 2008 in any scholarly journal or edited volume.
