Volunteer Opportunities

The UMSL VITA program offers a variety of opportunities for students currently enrolled at the USML College of Business Administration, as well as other individuals in our community who would like to join our program.

Tax preparers provide free basic tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers. To establish the greatest degree of public trust, tax preparers have a responsibility to provide free high quality service and uphold the highest of ethical standards. Tax preparers must attain IRS certification at the Basic level but are strongly encouraged to certify at the Intermediate level. Certification at the Advanced level is optional. Applicants should have at least 9 hours of accounting courses completed or have prior experience in tax preparation.

Site leaders provide coordination, organization, and supervision for the sites to which they are assigned. Each site leader is expected to assist other tax preparers as needed, conduct quality reviews of tax returns, and submit all reports and electronic tax returns ready for IRS transmission to the managing coordinators immediately after each shift. Site leaders must attain IRS certification at the Intermediate level, but are encouraged to certify at the Advanced level.

Support coordinators provide coordination, organization, and support to the managing coordinators in one or more specific aspects of the program (volunteer recruitment, marketing, training, general support, etc.). Support coordinators must attain IRS certification at the Intermediate level, but are welcome to certify at the Advanced level.

Managing coordinators provide coordination, organization, and supervision for all aspects of the UMSL VITA program. Managing coordinators work closely with the faculty advisor, attend annual IRS training, and delegate to support coordinators as necessary. Managing coordinators must attain IRS certification at the Advanced level.
