RENOVATION AND CONVERSION

"The Orpheum- now the American- has long played a prominent part in St. Louis theater life."
-St. Louis Post-Dispatch, September 18, 1960

The Orpheum held a long and distinguished career on the St. Louis theater scene. After ownership changed hands and the theater was converted into a movie house in the 1930's it was renovated in 1960. The renovation however was not for the reopening of the Orpheum. The American Theater was moving from its Grand location to the newly refurbished Ninth and St. Charles theater. The opening show in the new American Theater was "The Music Man". The theater came full circle and was again hosting stage shows like it had when it was first built.
