Kevin Jon Fernlund, Ph.D.
Professor of History
I am a Professor of History, specializing in North America, Exploration and Science, and Big History. I have authored Lyndon B. Johnson and Modern America (2009) and William Henry Holmes and the Rediscovery of the American West (2000) as well as edited Selected Historical Documents to Accompany America's History, Volume 2: Since 1865 (2011) and The Cold War American West, 1945 to 1989 (1998).
I am currently doing research for a book on the History of North America, AD 1500 to 2000. I am the Co-Chair of the 2015 Local Resource Committee of the Organization of American Historians and the Chair of the 2015 Program Committee of the Missouri Council on History. Between 2006 and 2012, I served as the Executive Director of the Western History Association and in 2001-2002 I was a Fulbright Senior Visiting U.S. Scholar to Hanoi, Vietnam.
Before taking my PhD at the University of New Mexico in 1992, I taught social studies at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, Arizona, and at Tuba City High School on the Navajo Indian Reservation. I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern Arizona University, after graduating in 1977 from Sunnyside High School in Tucson, Arizona.
