Editing with iMovie

Depending on the resources available you can let filming happen first and then teach editing or begin teaching editing to groups as they have available time. Macintosh provides a basic explanation of editing on their website that is helpful to show and tell with the kids. I am including some other hints that I have found helpful for making editing look more professional for a novice editor. It is important to think about how you want to assign roles in the video groups so that all members can participate in the editing process. It itends to be like driving; the person at the wheel tends to have the most influence as a default. In order to take advantage of the iMovie program make sure the video producers know the following skills.

Crop extra footage from a clip

Create a still picture from a video clip

Change the timing duration of a still clip

Split a Video/Audio clip into two pieces

Adjust the "zoom" level to make a fine adjustment

Import a still image from the camera or the web

View your project full screenTransitions and Titles

Create a transition i.e. cross dissolve between two clips

Fade in to beginning of your movie

Add a subtitle over a clip and put the end over Black after your movie

Working with sound

Adjusting the volume of an audio track

Record a voice narration

Extract the sound from a clip—paste over other video

Import CD music into your movie >> make it fade in and out

Cool Effects>>

Make a clip slow motion

Make a clip black and white

Helpful Hints

  • Don't rename media in the Finder!
  • Make more original titles in graphics programs like Photoshop and Appleworks paint.
  • Quicktime Pro (a $30 proram you download from the apple website) gives more editing options and the ability to save other quicktime movies on the Internet
  • Put titles on the screen long enough to read aloud twice
  • Make all imported graphics 640 by 480 imovie will put a black frame around anything smaller.
  • Add at least 5 seconds of black to before and after movie
  • Chunky fonts show up better in the titles
