Dr. Kristy Tucciarone is Assistant Teaching Professor of Media Studies. Currently, she teaches the advertising curriculum and advises the student organization Ad Corps...a student chapter of the American Advertising Federation, which is UMSL’s advertising club. Prior to teaching in the Media Studies department, she taught a variety of courses in the Department of Communication. Before beginning her teaching career, Dr. Tucciarone was employed with an advertising and public relations agency and then by (at the time) the world’s largest direct marketing agency. Some of her clients included Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Chevys Mexican Restaurants, Crazy Fish, Office Depot, Privacy Guard, Maggie O’ Brien’s Restaurant and Pub, Montgomery Ward, Harry’s Restaurant and Bar, Schneithorst Restaurant, and Station Casino St. Charles.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Tucciarone serves on the Board of Governors for Ad Club of St. Louis. The club’s vision is to enhance the allure of St. Louis advertising as a product and a profession. She also serves as chair of college scholarships, co-chair of the ADDYs (toughest advertising competition in the world) and committee member for educational programs. Since 2006, UMSL advertising students were the recipients of 2 ADDY's and 12 Certificates of Excellence (local) and 1 Certificate of Excellence (district). In addition, two students were honored with $1,000 scholarship from Ad Club St. Louis. Plus, another student won $250 for her creative entry in the College Connection Conference.
Dr. Tucciarone’s research focuses on the portrayals of higher education in film, portrayals of advertising in film and television, and advertising effects on search and college choice. Her research has been published in College Student Journal, College and University, The Community College Enterprise, and the Journal of Advertising Education. In addition, she has presented scholarly works at the following conferences: American Educational Research Association (AERA), American Culture Association/Popular Culture Association (ACA/PCA), Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), and the Missouri Academic Advising Association (MACADA). Furthermore, Dr. Tucciarone serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Advertising.
