Steven Phipps has taught a variety of courses in Media Studies. He is a graduate of UMSL, with a B.A. from the University of Missouri - St. Louis (UMSL), an M.A. from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE), and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri - Columbia (UMC). In addition to teaching at UMSL, he has also taught in St. Louis at Maryville University, Washington University, and St. Louis Community College at Meramec. He has also taught at Indiana-Purdue University at Ft. Wayne.
Dr. Phipps's research interests have tended to emphasize historical and legal aspects of the media, with a particular focus on legal and regulatory issues as they pertain to broadcasting. In addition to recent conference presentations, his published research has appeared in various academic journals, and he has appeared on the PBS series "History Detectives" as a media historian.
His most recent published research consists of chapters which appeared in two books. One of those chapters is concerned with the print industry's current switch to digital delivery, while the other examines the recent demise of traditional legal justifications for broadcast regulation. Other published research has appeared in such journals as the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journalism Quarterly, and the Historical Journal of Film, Radio, and Television.
Steven Phipps has taught courses in a wide variety of subjects, including broadcasting and mass media, cinema, communication technology, media law, audio and video production, documentary and experimental film and video, media aesthetics, international broadcasting, media history, communication theory, news writing, advertising, public relations, interpersonal communication, public speaking, organizational communication, small group communication, intercultural communication, family communication, health communication, forensics, and co-curricular activity administration.
Recent professional activities include extensive assistance with curriculum revision at Maryville University, co-chairing the Education Committee of Gateway Media Literacy Partners, serving as division webmaster, respondent, and panel host for the Broadcast Education Association, and reviewing manuscripts for publication in the academic journal American Journalism.
