The University of Missouri-St. Louis Athletic Department sponsors 11 varsity sports that compete at the NCAA Division II level, including baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's volleyball. UMSL is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Once known as the Rivermen and Riverwomen, UMSL changed its name to the Tritons in August of 2007.
Throughout its history, UMSL has had 105 student-athletes receive All-American honors and has had 50 different teams advance to the NCAA National Tournament, including the 1973 men's soccer team that won the NCAA National Championship. UMSL has won five conference championships in its history, including its most recent with the baseball team during the 2003 season. More than 460 student-athletes have earned all-conference honors, while 600 student-athletes have received Academic All-Conference honors. Additionally, UMSL has had five student-athletes earn GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors and 14 student-athletes earn Academic All-American honors.
In 2001, the UMSL Athletic Department started the UMSL Sports Hall of Fame, which currently has a total of 68 inductees. More information about the Athletic department can be found online at www.umsltritons.com.
