Welcome to the Laboratory
Our research falls within the broad field of behavioral medicine. We use clinical and community approaches to understand how physical and mental health concerns impact middle-aged and older adults.
From a community psychological perspective, we recognize that the very best psychotherapy will never reduce the incidence rates (new cases) of mood disorders. Instead, we focus on prevention strategies and services for at-risk women living in the community – most who do not seek out psychotherapy. Basing our work on Bandura's (1997) self-efficacy theory and evidence of its pivotal role in adaptive functioning, our efforts aim to emphasize and build upon the many strengths and resources of middle-aged and older women.
