Student Evaluation
Exams and Grades
There will be 3 examinations. Each will account for 1/3
of the final grade. Students earning a total of 270 points on the three
exams are assured of at least an "A minus"
in the course. Students earning 180 points after
deductions for unexcused absences (see below) are assured of
passing with at least a "D minus".
Exams 1 & 2 will be given during class periods as indicated in the syllabus. Exam 3 will be given during the period allocated for the final exam. It will focus mainly on material covered since exam 2, but some questions may invoke important concepts from earlier portions of the course.
Exams will comprise mainly a combination of short-answer, matching, and essay questions. Questions will be based on lecture material. Do not rely on the textbook as the primary source for exam material. Some questions may include visual material (e.g., images of cells) from lecture.
Make-up exams will be given only in case of documented illness or other emergency. If you foresee a conflict (unusual work schedule, other exams on the same day, etc.) that will make it difficult to take an examination at the scheduled time, see me several days AHEAD OF TIME and we will arrange for you to take the exam EARLY.
Class Attendance
Class attendance is essential to success in this
course. Attendance will be taken periodically at the
beginning of class. Each unexcused absence
will result in a deduction of one point from your
grade total.
Withdrawal from the Course
Students may withdraw from any course without a grade until Monday,
February 13. Thereafter, a student must receive a grade when withdrawing
from a class. A student may withdraw from this
course with an "Excused" within one week after the return of the first examination,
regardless of his/her grade on that exam.
Thereafter, any student who withdraws with a failing grade will receive an "F".
It is university policy that no student may withdraw from any
course after Tuesday 8 April 2006.
Office Hours
My office hours are indicated under "General Information"
on the course web page and on the information sheet passed out the first day
of class. If those hours conflict with your schedule, I will be happy
to arrange an appointment to meet with you.
