An overview of VPN

A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network such as the internet. What A VPN allows is a secure connection between two destinations on this public network such that data can be transferred without needing to worry about interception.

This is accomplished through point-to-point communication using dedicated land lines, encryption, or a combination of the two.

Because VPN is actually made up of many different protocols and technologies, there is not one person which is responsible for its creation. You have to break it down into each part.
