Students Show-Me Science Skills

Join in the fun to demonstrate science concepts by entering the Missouri Students Show-Me Science Skills Session at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in connection with the Annual Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium.

Challenge

Be the Missouri State individual or team that is selected as the one who physically demonstrates or illustrates a principle of science or engineering in the most dynamic, motivational and understanding way.

Parameters for Competition

  1. Participation can be one individual or up to a group of four students.
  2. At least half of the participants must have submitted an independent student research paper to the JSEHS.
  3. All participants must be at the sophomore or higher grade level.
  4. Participants must be covered by personal or family health, hospital and accident insurance.
  5. Teachers or mentors may not participate in the presentation or set up.
  6. A detailed description including concept, objectives, materials and hazards, cautions or warnings and a narrative of the actual presentation must be provided to the JSEHS.
  7. Presentations can not be longer than five (5) minutes with a maximum of five (5) minutes set-up time.
  8. Participants are responsible for materials, equipment, and safety measures and safety equipment.

Criteria for Judging Presentations

  1. Degree of creativity and uniqueness in presentation, approach and methodology.
  2. Organization and flow of presentation.
  3. Accuracy of scientific information presented.
  4. Performance skills demonstrated.
  5. Sophistication of principle or concept presented.
  6. Clarity of explanation.
  7. Understandability of concept or principle.
  8. Demonstration of mastery of the concept or principle.
  9. Empathy with audience.
  10. Quality and completeness of paper describing the presentation.

Awards

Recognition trophies will be awarded to the first, three-place winners, individuals or groups, and the first-place presentation, individual or group, will receive a $100.00 honorarium. Selection is by JSEHS student peers.
