College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Achievement for Excellence in Science Award

The University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Arts and Sciences has recently established the College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Achievement for Excellence in Science Award to recognize the most outstanding junior-level science students enrolled in the greater St. Louis metro area high schools. The student, his/her two guests, and the chairperson of their high school science department will be invited to the ceremony for the recognition and awarding of certificates at a dinner to be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the Millennium Student Center on the UMSL campus.

In order to identify the most outstanding science student at each high school, we are asking the help and expertise of the chairperson of the science departments. There is a nomination form and a list of criteria that can be used to determine who is most deserving of this recognition.

Criteria include:

  1. Participation in formal or informal individual research investigations or creative activities in science-related activities.
  2. Participation in science-related, extra-curricular activities; e.g. clubs, field trips, volunteer work, informal education institutions, etc.
  3. Prior participation in JSEHS, STARS, JETS, Science Fairs, Robotics, Science Olympiad, etc.
  4. Membership and participation in science-related organizations. For example:
       - Junior Academy of Science of St. Louis
       - Missouri Junior Academy of Science or
       - Other local, regional or national organizations
  5. Number of 9th – 11th grade science courses and grades.
  6. Number of 9th – 11th grade math courses and grades.
  7. Grade point average in science.
  8. Overall grade point/4.0.
  9. Standardized test scores (SAT/PSAT or ACT scores).
  10. Previous recognition by science-related awards or honors, e.g. Honor Society, scholarships.
