Assets and Liabilities

Strongest asset brought to the team
The strongest asset is my passion for editing and writing. I am very mindful of details in the written word, and I thrive on helping teammates compose and clarify their messages. My position as a business analyst developed my ability to consider multiple perspectives when creating documentation, and working as a data analyst allowed me many opportunities to tailor information to specific audiences.
Additional assets: upbeat and easygoing personality, genuine concern for others, intense desire to learn
Largest liability brought to the team
The largest liability is my difficulty in articulating thoughts, ideas, or instructions. I find that explaining simple concepts is usually easy, but abstract concepts cause me to slow down and think more about what to say and how to say it. Although this skill was well developed in previous positions, its decline has made me somewhat reluctant to share what's on my mind. However, I am determined to improve my clarity in verbal communication and am confident that working on a team will provide that opportunity.
Additional liabilities: prioritizing tasks inefficiently, not asking for assistance, including too much information

Computer Education and Experience
  • Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Java
  • JavaScript

  • Eclipse
  • SPSS
  •     As a business analyst, I provided technical support for users of desktop and laptop computers and supported company-specific systems and software, in addition to widely used office applications. My responsibilities as a data analyst included maintaining the office computers, printers, and network, in addition to creating Web-based surveys to collect information from clients.
Web Design: I have entry-level experience in designing and building Web pages, having created the majority of my pages in information systems classes at UMSL.

    Business Education and Experience
My business education has developed partially through several challenging courses at UMSL. By studying accounting, management and organizational behavior, and other business-related subjects, I have gained valuable knowledge of concepts and strategies practiced in the business world.
My business experience and further education have developed through professional experience in the business world and also through service in the US Army. I worked as a business analyst at US Bank for over two years, where I functioned on a small, highly trained team in a help desk environment. My department was the first line of contact for mortgage employees and provided technical and business-related support to users nationwide.
I worked as a data analyst at Philliber Research Associates, a program evaluation firm, for nearly two years. The position exposed me to the inner workings of non-profit organizations and developed my ability for creating comprehensive surveys and analyzing data from multiple perspectives.
During my three years of service in the US Army, I gained leadership skills firsthand in various roles and conditions. My commitment to the team was reinforced as I learned how focus and dedication can significantly contribute to a mission's success.

    Experience Relevant to Project Area
The focus of the project in question is the electronic communications provided to the students of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The goal of the project is to develop and improve the communications available via the UMSL website and sent to students via e-mail and other electronic messaging services. I feel that my professional experience and skills would contribute significantly to the success of the project.
I have worked with local and national non-profit organizations to measure and improve the effectiveness of their human services programs. I have created and distributed surveys, co-facilitated focus groups, provided regular project updates, and written and edited reports that described the organizations' activities and results.
In another capacity, I have assisted users by diagnosing and troubleshooting their technical and business problems, and then directing them to timely resolutions. I have researched documentation and compiled information for system updates, informational bulletins, and system notifications, all of which required adapting for specific audiences.

    Self-Ratings of Skills and Abilities
(based on scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest)

Project Management / Ability to Coordinate Team Projects -- Rating: 8
I have a strong work ethic and value integrity in myself and my teammates. I am always willing to do what's best for the team, and I thrive on going the extra mile. I stay in frequent contact with team members and regularly review the team's progress. As a business analyst, I coordinated the writing and organization of my department's work methods, which were developed into the department's first procedures manual. However, I tend to be a perfectionist and often focus excessively on minor details. I occasionally take on more responsibilities than I can feasibly handle, so it's very important for me to delegate tasks.
    Creativity -- Rating: 7
I have learned that there can be multiple solutions to a single problem. I love to challenge conventional thinking by thinking outside the box, but I do recognize conventional thinking as a typical approach to solving problems. My department at US Bank was responsible for sending system alerts to specific groups of employees. The response time was generally slow since an alert had to be created from scratch for each scenario. To speed delivery time, I created templates for every foreseeable scenario, which enabled the department to alert the affected users more efficiently and expeditiously.
    Communication Skills -- Rating: 6
I express myself very effectively via the written word, having honed my writing and editing skills through self-study and continuing education. I am aware of the significance of body language in personal interactions and how people's actions speak louder than words. I was a member of Toastmasters for nearly two years and learned how to develop and give several varieties of speeches. Although I have made much progress in my verbal skills, I still find it challenging to communicate ideas and instructions verbally, which sometimes results in excessive speech and ambiguity.
    Analytical Skills -- Rating: 8
I thoroughly enjoy diagnosing problems and figuring out how things work. At US Bank, I worked on a help desk that averaged 3300 calls per month. My department had to diagnose and troubleshoot every issue, and then direct each caller to a timely resolution. At Philliber Research Associates, I analyzed Excel and SPSS databases to ensure the data's accuracy and determine its relevance to project needs. I continue to develop my ability to articulate technical issues in terms the layperson can understand.
