Introduction
A new museum is opening this fall in our city. Unlike traditional
museums, whose
exhibits tend to fall firmly into one discipline such as art, history or
science, this new museum will have an interdisciplinary approach based
broadly on the idea of American Studies. The museum’s board of directors
has mandated that one of the inaugural exhibits address “The Roaring Twenties,”
and one influential board member, an ardent fan of F.
Scott Fitzgerald, has strongly recommended that the exhibit be set
up as a Gatsby party, in which museum patrons may simply stroll through
an exciting and glamorous party scene and encounter the most important
aspects of 1920s society and culture. As a member of
the large team that has been dedicated to the design and production of
“The Roaring Twenties” exhibit, your task is to flesh out this recommendation
into an interesting and viable exhibit that will retain historical accuracy
and the true flavor of the decade while appealing to the young people of
today. The exhibit must succeed at being both educational and entertaining
because, unless the museum meets stringent criteria of educational merit
and attracts a large quota of student patrons, it will lose the federal
grant money that is its primary source of funding and be forced to close.
