I
am proud to welcome you to one of the most unique institutes in
the United States. Ten years
ago there was no E. Desmond Lee Regional Institute of Tutorial Education.
There were no offices, computers, brochures, academic or social
training for staff, students or volunteers. I came here wondering
how six universities without a history of collaboration would assist
ten of the largest youth serving agencies in the city, many competing
for the same children. I have seen Des Lee’s vision materialize.
We have training programs for teachers, trainers, community leaders
and others interested in improving motivation, social and learning
abilities of those they serve. In short, we are addressing the “achievement
gap” with research-based, best practices approaches. I couldn’t
have a better group of people to work with or a more worthwhile
vision of the future… a future we will build together.
