The Student Project Bank
This page lists some opportunities for Community Service Student Projects
for use in courses or independent study. Participating organizations have
included UM-St. Louis, United Way of Greater St. Louis, Institute of Management
Accountants (IMA), Institute for Operations Research and Management Science
(InfORMS), Missouri Good Will Industries, St. Jane Catholic Community Center,
Operation Food Search, Youth in Need, Harvester Church Food Pantry, and
The Epilepsy Foundation.

Independent study projects at UM-St. Louis have provided up to three credit
hours for applied activity in a community service organization.

Courses have provided up to 1/3 of the grade based on results and observations
in community-based projects.

with Kid's sports program with about 1000 participants /season has
equipment inventory, logistics of assigning teams, scheduling games coaches
and officials.

College Newspaper has logistics of weekly production, advertising
acquisition and scheduling, needs info on position in market especially
on national advertising.

* Eastern Missouri
Chapter of National Arthritis Foundation has issues with risk analysis,
disaster planning and Year 2000 planning.

* Child Daycare
Association has need to plan database and records management, paper
flows for administration of child care programs.

* Boys' Club
has membership registration process that needs analysis of paper flows
and technological opportunities.

Bi-State Chapter of Red Cross needs system for tracking training
of employees and volunteers

of Red Cross in collaboration with US Olympic Committee to
develop a program for sports safety training operations issues include
logistics of publicizing program and training coaches.

* Crisis Intervention
Hotline to study efficiency in managing and responding to calls for
help. Work flows, equipment and paperwork reduction could be important.

International assistance group handles orientations to US and St.
Louis for immigrants and refugees. Operations issues include scheduling
and paperwork flows, time and work estimates. Also seeking help in setting
up a market survey to help better define need.

program needs help in system for scheduling assignments.

Agency seeking help in analyzing survey data on wages and benefits
for employees in not-for -profit organizations.

short-term crisis shelter seeking help on a system for tracking donors

Operations Projects include scheduling of a volunteer staff with heterogeneous
schedules, information management and paperwork flows, and general operations
management review.

Child Center for up to 63 children has rapid growth due to new contracts
and requires more structure in managing volunteers and information.

Multiservice agency serving the homeless in St. Louis (approximately400/day)
has acquired a new five-story building and must plan orderly traffic control
that is secure, safe, cost effective and humane (interest in barcode system)

Womens' crisis center has 24-hour staff scheduling and work-flow
issues.
