Missouri Council for the Social Studies is a professional membership association of elementary, middle, secondary and college social studies educators whose goals are to promote the teaching of social studies, encourage research in social studies, facilitate the professional growth of its members and inform educators by publishing and sponsoring the following:
- Horizon Newsletter featuring issues and trends in social studies, teaching resources and professional grant and travel/study opportunities.
- Fall and Spring conferences featuring workshops, speakers, textbook exhibits, resources and displays of instructional materials.
- Invitations to conferences and workshops sponsored by universities and other educational groups.

Sample Instructional and Professional Development Resources
- Traveling Trunks of "hands-on" objects, mounted photographs, audio and videotapes, and teacher handbooks are available for two weeks at a fee of $35/ trunk to cover shipping and insurance. Trunk topics are aligned with Missouri, Illinois, NCSS and National History standards.
- Video tapes - Monument to the Dream, Gateway to the West, Charles Russell-An American Artist, A Monumental Story: The Gateway Arch and Old Courthouse, Touring the Gateway Arch and Conviction of the Heart/The Challenge of Yellowstone - are available for loan at no charge.
- Teacher workshops, at the Old Courthouse and Gateway Arch, introduce the educational resources and provide ideas and materials for classroom lessons. Workshops at schools can be arranged.

- National Parks can be used to teach every subject. Many have online lesson plans for teachers and activities for kids at www.nps.gov. Teaching with Historic Places has a variety of free on-line lesson plans at www.cr.nps.gov/nr/twhp.

- Teachers Resource Center includes print and video resources on a wide range of multicultural and international subjects. A large collection of teacher-developed units and curriculum materials is also housed in the Teacher Resource Center. The collection is especially rich in resources on China and Japan. Many of the teacher-developed units are aligned to the Show-Me-Standards. Materials are available for loan.
- Each year IEC offers a variety of programs for K-12 teachers. The programs include yearlong in-depth seminars as well as all day workshops. This year, programs will feature the social studies standards, China and a collaborative effort with the Art Museum. IEC also offers a year long humanities-based program for teams of teachers who jointly develop curriculum.

- The Center has a wide range of economic education materials for grades K-12. These include a CD-ROM, videos, curriculum units, lessons and pamphlets. Some of these materials are available for loan. Many are bench marked to the Show-Me-Standards. These resources are examples of BEST PRACTICES in economic education- accurate, grade-level appropriate content, hands-on learning activities and teaching strategies that address a variety of learning styles.
- Center staff offers workshops and conferences during the school year for K-12 public, parochial and private school teachers throughout the St. Louis region. Some of these are after school; others are all day programs. Information about dates, times and locations may be found on the Center's web site. Center staff also provides workshops and curriculum consultation for local schools/school districts upon request. Center staff offers graduate credit courses during the summer. Courses offered include Economics for the Elementary Classroom for teachers of grades K-8; the Economic Study Tour for teachers of grades K-12; Making Sense of Money and Banking for teachers of grades 4-12; Mini-Society for teachers of grades 4-6 and Teaching Entrepreneurship for teachers of grades 9-12. In each of these courses accurate economic content is taught and strategies for delivering that content to the classroom are demonstrated. Often there are partial tuition scholarships available to practicing Missouri teachers who enroll in these courses. Check the Center's web site for additional information about these courses. Speakers are available on a limited basis. In addition, through its Economic Ambassadors program, teachers of grades K-8 may request a classroom visit. An Economic Ambassador will visit the classroom and teach an economics lessons.

- The Center has resources that can be used to integrate economics into U.S. and world history, geography and government. There are materials available for teaching economics through children's literature in the K-6 classroom. Additionally, the Center has integrated curriculum units such as Zooconomy, The Gingerbread Man and Arts Mart.

Sample Professional Development Resources
- Workshops and presentations of cross-curricular uses of geography in K-12 classrooms: These can be tailored for time and content.
- Workshops for Success on the MAP Social Studies Assessment presented by our teacher consultants who have been trained by DESE MAP personnel.
- Summer Institutes for Professional Studies in K-12 Geography: These include on-site institute studies in differing locations according to topic and training in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software in grades 5-12.
- Annual Fall Statewide Geography Conference held in Columbia, Missouri on a Saturday in late September: this conference includes a noted guest keynote speaker, sharing sessions, and 4 sessions of content lectures and workshops for K-12 teachers and preservice students.

- Using Geography in K-5 Language Arts Classes: this presentation focuses on including geography as an integral aspect of cultural literature, and as an extension for other literature. It also includes suggestions of geographic literature to integrate into social studies classes and other cross-curricular areas.
- Geographic Inclusions in Historical Studies: Give geography its rightful place in the study of historical events. This presentation includes general map strategies in World History and a Civil War focus in American History.
