All About MCAT

The Medical College Admission Test represents an attempt to evaluate:

  1. The student's knowledge and ability to solve problems in the areasof biology, chemistry, and physics
  2. The student's skill in analysis of paragraphs, tabular material, graphs, etc., and
  3. The ability to write two first draft compositions in correct English.
Students taking the MCAT are expected to have completed the equivalentofone year of college study in the following areas: Biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and mathematics (calculus not required). Click on the section of your choice:

The Biological Sciences will concentrate onbasic biology and biologically-related chemistry.

The Physical Sciences examination will focus on physics and physically-related chemistry areas.

The Verbal Reasoning passages will be takenfrom the social sciences, the humanities, and from areas of the naturalsciences not tested in the other two sections.

Topics for the writing sample are not taken from the content of physics, biology, or chemistry.

The above sample test (provided) has been approximately cut in half.It has sample passages and questions that you can answer and grade. Countthe number of correct answers in the individual disciplines to receivea raw score, which must then be converted to a 15-point scaled score. Although individual medical schools will vary with respect to thescores they require, a standard score of 11 or greater is considered tobe quitecompetitive. A score of 7 or less would indicate an area requiringadditionalpreparation.
