WEEK 11

November 1 (Monday): The Resurgent States

1. How do today's state governments and state political parties differ from state governments and political parties 100 years ago?  Do these differences make the "resurgence" of the states as policy laboratories fundamentally different from their role as policy laboratories in the Progressive era?  Specify.

2. Keeping in mind all the state policies we have read about since the beginning of the course, is state policy experimentation biased toward either liberal or conservative policy outcomes?  Are liberal state policies in areas like the environment necessary for future liberal national policies?

3. Is federalism an impediment to better metropolitan governnance, or is it a facilitator?  Use the St. Louis region to help evaluate this question.
