Chapter 43, Drill b: Practice turning an English verb phrase into a correct Latin verb phrase.

In the following Latin sentences, translate into correct Latin the English verb phrase in parentheses. Use subjunctive or indicative or infinitive as appropriate, with ut or ne or cum if needed, as well as any pronoun or other element needed. Give verb last.

Examples:
Quintus adeo carmina diligebat (that he did not hesitate) multa scribere. Answer: ut non dubitaret, because it is a result clause, so no ne; secondary sequence.
legatus milites rogavit (why they were idling). Answer: cur cessarent, because it is an indirect question.

1. Quintus Vergilium rogavit cur Maecenas (had not called him back).
2. tam verecundus saepe est (that he cannot speak).
3. Vergilius Quinto imperavit (to rejoice); Maecenas eum diligebat.
4. Quintus tanta arte usus est (that all praised him).
5. Quintus tam bene carmina componebat (that Maecenas accepted him) in numerum amicorum.
6. Maecenas scivit (that the poems would be famous)[use subject-linking verb-complement order].
7. tribunus militibus semper imperat (not to throw away) scuta.
8. (Let's slip out)!
9. Maecenas vir tam insignis erat (that Quintus admired him).
10. Quintus "nescio" inquit "(whether Maecenas will accept me)".
