FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ST. LOUIS – September 9, 2013 – The University of Missouri–St. Louis Executive Leadership Consortium presents their annual Great Lecture Series on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, from 5:30 p.m.–7:15 p.m., at the Millennium Student Center at UMSL. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Melvin D. Shipp, dean of The Ohio State University College of Optometry.
Dr. Shipp’s talk is titled “Improving the Public’s Health Through Better Inter-professional Communication.” The purpose of the program is to invite a leader of notable achievement to speak on a timely topic.
Dr. Shipp has advised and served several federal institutions, notably, the Food and Drug Administration, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He was a member of the NEI Planning Committee for the National Eye Health Education Project, a nationwide program with the goal of preventing blindness through public and professional education. In 2006, he co-chaired the development of a CDC-sponsored vision health initiative titled “Improving the Nation’s Vision Health: A Coordinated Public Health Approach.” Dr. Shipp is currently a member of Prevent Blindness America’s National Board of Directors.
The UMSL Executive Leadership Consortium, a campus-wide leadership program, coordinates the speaker series. ELC prepares students and a cross-section of career professionals to become effective leaders to meet current and future demands in response to regional needs and beyond.
Karen Carroll, executive fellow at the Consortium and president of kcienterprise, will moderate the program. A reception will follow. The program is free and open to the public.
