My research is in philosophy of science and
metaphysics, focusing in particular on causation and its use in science, especially biology. (Click the 'Papers'

I began as an assistant professor at University of Missouri-St Louis in fall 2005. I
received my PhD from the London School of Economics. I was also a visiting scholar at University of California, San Diego.
Before switching to philosophy I did graduate work in economics, receiving an
MSc. Before even that, I began my student days as an undergraduate at
Cambridge University studying mathematics and then history.
I am also a contributor to the philosophy of science blog It's only a theory.
Away from philosophy, I have won money at tournaments in both pool and
poker, although these days that record might be in some jeopardy
if put to the test - unless the opposition were other
philosophers,
of course. At foosball, I should still be able to beat normal
people too. Recently, I have been developing a slightly less
embarrassing golf
swing, and a love of late Beethoven string quartets and piano sonatas.
