The Newman Officers strive to support UMSL students with creative programming,
warm hospitality, enthusiastic outreach, and leadership in faith activities.

The Catholic Newman Center is an organization comprised of students from
the University of Missouri—St. Louis and surrounding communities lead by the professional staff
and a team of 6-10 students called the ‘Newman Officers’ who organize events.

We strive to help each other find and experience the God within ourselves and in the world around us.
We challenge each other within a welcoming environment of dynamic worship,
fellowship, and hospitality.  We are called to be a Catholic faith community; passionate about what
happens to individuals; disturbed by injustice; and impatient for the kingdom of God.

These are the officers for the 2008-2009 school year:

JoAnne Tinsley , President

JoAnne Tinsley is a graduate student working on a Master of Accounting.  She tutors in the Accounting Lab (4th floor SSB, feel free to visit) and also works as a lifeguard at the community pool.  For fun, JoAnne likes to walk and talk with friends, eat half price appetizers and thirty cent wings, go horseback riding and just about anything else that involves friends and quality time.  Oh yeah, and she plays the cello in the Newman Center basement.  Skeereet! JoAnne can be reached at jmt6wc@umsl.edu.

Kelly Sedlacek, Outreach

Kelly is a senior majoring in Elementary Education. She transferred to UMSL last year and fell instantly in love with the atmosphere at the Newman Center. Kelly works at Briar Crest Elementary doing what she loves, working with children and has been working summers at the Saint Louis Zoo for the past six years. In addition to hanging out with her friends and family, Kelly enjoy being crafty and doing projects whenever possible. She loves meeting new people and participating in Newman events! Kelly can be contacted at kssxrb@umsl.edu.

Holly Scheibel, Service and Justice

Holly Scheibel is a senior majoring in Chemistry. She loves recycling and can tell what kind of plastic an item is just by glancing at it! She likes running, drinking green tea, looking up info on Wikipedia, eating fair trade dark chocolate, hanging out with great people around the Newman Center, and helping people. Holly can often be found in the Newman Garden, trying to tame the wild squash plants and cilantro. Holly can be reached at hollyscheibel@umsl.edu

Erin Leahy, Social Events

Erin is a Senior majoring in Psychology. This is her second year at UMSL and third year as part of the Newman Center.  She is very excited about the new school year.  She loves to hang out, watch movies, play pool and just be with people.  If you are looking to kill some time on those long breaks between your classes come hang out at the Newman House, that's probably where you will find her.

Mike Schien, Member At Large

Mike is an elementary education major who plans to be teaching in the classroom fall of '11. If you see him, he will usually be singing somewhere (definitely Sunday masses at ProHo!) Mike also works at Schnucks in Bridgeton and, if not at school, this is where he will be. For fun, Mike likes to hang out with friends and take long walks through Forest Park sometimes armed with a camera. Mike is proud to be part of Newman this year and hopes that anyone who is interested in getting involved will...Mike can be reached at mwschien@umsl.edu

Missy Krupp, Historian

Missy transferred to UMSL from St. Louis Community College at Meramec, and has been here for a year. After her "educational" trip to London this summer, Missy will begin her second year at UMSL with a major in Communications Rhetoric and Theory. She works at a doctor’s office and enjoys babysitting on the weekends. Her interests include listening to music, working out, hanging out at the CNC, and spending time with her family. Missy is your friendly historian and is the one with the camera at all the CNC outings. If you have any questions about anything, you can contact Missy at mkpmc@umsl.edu.

Mike Ruzycki, SGA Representative

Mike is a sophomore at UMSL this year, and is still looking for a major. In the meantime, he's studying a little bit of everything and a little bit of nothing...focusing somewhat heavily in English. He loves helping people with their work. Even if he doesn't have any idea what he's talking about, he can help you get the wrong answers! Mike first got involved with the CNC when he signed up for the Great Getaway his freshman year. When he walked into the house for dinner before leaving for the overnight, there was Ben Harper on the stereo, spaghetti on the stove, and all kinds of great people to talk to! He pretty much hasn't left since! Outside of the CNC, Mike is a big fan of, well, the planet. He always keeps a soccer ball and a few frisbees in his trunk as well as his unicycle. He also enjoys mountain biking, road biking, backpacking, camping, canoeing, etc. You can usually find him at the CNC, probably in the basement in the middle of an epic ping-pong battle or you can email him at mtryb5@umsl.edu.
