Librarians

Everyone Else

Librarians see PROBLEMS in the information universe FIRST. Once the problem is understood, the most appropriate tools are utilized in an attempt to solve the problem. The role of the librarian is to facilitate this entire process. The Internet, and Internet search engines are only relevant in the context of a given problem, and an understanding of what a given tool can do, and how it does it. The rest of the universe tends to focus on TOOLS FIRST. "What computer do I use?" or "Where on the Internet can I find?" are typical questions. The REAL question to be asked is "What do I use to find out about X?" Deciding to use the Internet for research before understanding its relevance to a given problem is akin to using an electric screwdriver to brush one's teeth.
