Ceramic, Raku
My first experience with clay many years ago resulted in love at first touch. I have always enjoyed its tactile, textural qualities, while witnessing its changes under my direction. The Raku process has also held a fascination for me with its metallic glows and sometimes unpredictable glaze results. I find it immediate and mysterious. The relationships of form, space, color and texture play a large role in my current ceramic vessels. I enjoy contrasts: smooth vs. textured, gloss against matt, tall combined with wide, and other design elements. The embellishments I use on my pieces reflect my experiences as a jeweler as well as inspirations from other cultures. Reed, metals, coins, and a variety of found materials serve as decoration and function, but they also provide strong visual connections and extensions in my work.
