Lauren's Cross

One of my student teachers, Lauren, had several of these nice, sgraffito-decorated crosses in her senior exhibition. I asked her to make me one, and I combined it with scraps of wood, fabric, and beads to make Lauren's Cross. The concept of a decorative cross, though it has a long history, seems at odds with the brutality and injustice of Christ's cross. But it reflects truthfully the transformation from the violent and cursed, to the blessed symbol of personal peace with God. The cross has become a metaphor for the transformation God has produced in me through faith in Christ.
