The Second Annual Educating for Change Curriculum Fair will be held Saturday, September 30th from 9 - 3 at the International Institute, 3654 South Grand Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63118. The event is sponsored by the Literacy for Social Justice Group and The Literacy Roundtable to celebrate National Literacy Month.

The theme of this year's fair is "Immigrant and Refugee Rights in the Context of Racial Justice".  The purpose of this fair is to bring together people from across various communities -- parents, educators, community activists, students -- and across the lifespan (early childhood, elementary, middle school, high school, teacher education/college, adult education, etc.) to learn about the steps people have taken in teaching and learning for social justice.

There will be table displays, workshops and featured sessions. Featured sessions include: Suzanne LeLaurin from the International Institute who will open the fair with a talk on "Immigrant Rights & Social Justice: Implications in an Age of Terrorism". Later a featured session with Chicago based educator and activist Jesus Macarena-Avila on "Art Education as Agency: Immigrant Rights and Bookmaking". He will speak about recent community art workshops done with CAAAELII, Coalition of African, Arab, Asian, European, and Latino Immigrants of Illinois, a community based organization focused on immigrant issues. Macarena-Avila centers his workshops on bookmaking and uses themes relevant to today's immigrant rights movement. He will also discuss the March 10th immigrant march event, which is now historic for Chicago. This year, a strong thread of student leadership and student led table displays. The day ends with a panel discussion and community forum to discuss immigrant rights in the context of racial justice in St. Louis and its implications for our educational institutions.

This Curriculum Fair will provide a comfortable and stimulating place for educators and activists to share their work and ideas and to find inspiration in the work of their colleagues. We believe this curriculum fair can help in developing a network of educators and community activists in St. Louis who are committed to educating for social change.
