Biology 440: Ecological Research in Temperate Zones (Fall 2000)

Tucker Prairie

Tucker Prairie is a 65 ha relict patch of tall grass prairie dominated by bluestem grasses.  Located about 25 km from the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, this prairie has been managed by UMC's Biological Sciences Department for over 40 years.  Our objectives for Saturday's trip are to become familiar with the tall grass prairie ecosystem and strategies for its management and conservation.  In addition, we will conduct short field projects that address some aspect of the ecology of prairie ecosystems.  We will be accompanied this weekend by (1) Dr. Claire Kucera, Professor Emeritus at UMC and author of several research articles and books, including the Grasses of Missouri, (2) Dr. John Faaborg, Professor, UMC, a well known ornithologist and present Manager of Tucker Prairie, and (3) Dr. Chrissy Howell, Post-doc, UMSL, who has led several research projects in the past at Tucker Prairie.
