Biology 440: Ecological Research in Temperate Zones (Fall 2000)

Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park, Reynolds County, Missouri

This trip will take us into the heart of the Ozarks to Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park on Saturday and Sunday.  The site is famous for the canyon-like gorge ("shut-in") where the East Fork Black River cuts its way though.  Rocks that form the shut-ins are among the oldest on the continent and are estimated to be 1.5 billion years old!  At Johnson's Shut-Ins on Saturday and a TBA (likely Hughes Mountain Natural Area or Taum Sauk Mountain State Park), we will visit a variety of habitat types characteristic of the Ozark Natural Division, including igneous glades, fens, and oak-hickory-shortleaf pine forests.
