Definition of a Distance Learner
Services and features of the University Libraries are generally available to ALL faculty, staff, and enrolled students. Some document delivery services are available ONLY for officially recognized UM-St. Louis Distance Learners
(e.g., the ability to request via Interlibrary Loan an article that is available in one of the UMSL Libraries’ print journals. ).
The UMSL Libraries define "distance learners" as students who:
- are currently enrolled in UMSL credit, fee-based distance education courses
- and do not also attend classes on the UMSL main (north or south) campuses
These distance education courses include:
- UMSL online programs and courses, such as the online MBA, Nursing and Education classes
- UMSL Interactive Video (ITV) video conference classes attended at a remote site
- UMSL Video Instructional Program (VIP) classes
- UMSL Off-campus classes are offered at community colleges, hospitals, school districts, and other work sites
UMSL Ph.D. students who have left the St. Louis area and are enrolled in dissertation credit may inquire as to their eligibility for Library distance learner services.
