Communicating

So, what does all this mean?  It means, as I suggested earlier, that we must develop a fluency in information technology that allows us to use the resources available, and not be used, or by-passed, by them.  We must become prepared to communicate in an information society.

To communicate effectively, we must understand certain things:

All communication is mediated
Face-to-face
Written word
Telephone
Video
Computers
Computer Mediated Communication presents a variety of issues and formats:
Transparency
The interface is new
User skill level varies
Synchronous modes
Chatrooms
Webcams
Asynchronous modes
E-mail
Individual
Mailing lists
Discussion boards
Hybrid
Web pages
Virtual Worlds (MUDS)
To Use any mode of communication effectively, one must understand the rules.
