Chapter 4 - Drugs in America: The historical context & Lecture notes "Drug use in America"

    1. Be aware of the social, economic, and political context of each drug law. For example, what role did racism play?

    2. Be familiar with each law, including the National Prohibition Act, Anti-Opium legislation, Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, Shanghai Commission, Hauge Committee, Harrison Act, Marihuana Tax Act, and the Controlled Substances Act.

    3. Be aware of drug use in the 19th century - medical use, recreation use, technological innovations, and drug user population. For instance, what were some social problems surrounding the ease of obtaining drugs?

    4. Be aware of the social and political context of drugs during presidential terms (Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush).

Chapter 5 - Drugs in the News & Lecture notes "Bias, the Media, and Research on Drug Use"

    1. Know about media bias. Contrast factual bias and selection bias.

    2. Know the four theories of media bias.

    3. Be familiar with sensationalism in media.

    4. How were new drugs portrayed in media from the 1930's to present? What are some historically common themes regarding media depictions of drugs?

    5. Be familiar with the Janet Cooke story.

Chapter 6 - How Do We Know It's True? Methods of research & Lecture notes "Bias, the Media, and Research on Drug Use" and "Research: Patterns and trends 2005"

    1. Be familiar with social research on drugs. Know about lying and relative accuracy of statistics, sampling, and the difference between inferential and descriptive statistics.

    2. Be aware of the different data sources regarding drug use, including limitations and sampling methods. What trends of drug use do these data sources suggest?

    3. What are some limitations and methodological problems when studying drug use?

Chapter 7 - Historical Trends in Drug Consumption: From past to current use & Lecture notes "Bias, the Media, and Research on Drug Use" and "Research: Patterns and trends 2005"

1. Be able to distinguish among rates and patterns of drug use. What drugs have the highest continuance and prevalence rates? What is meant by consumption rates?

2. Be familiar with drug use trends throughout history. How did alcohol consumption change prior to prohibition, during prohibition, and following prohibition to current use?

3. What were the general trends in drug use during the 1960's to present? How does legal drug use compare to illicit drug use?

4. What are two categories of drug use, and how are these categories combined into four-fold typology? Why are these categories non-inclusive? What are the principle forms of drug use are included in each category?

5. What are the trends with pharmaceutical drug use? What does "pharmaceutical revolutions" refer to, and what are the five pharmaceutical revolutions (and Keel's sixth)? What to do these revolutions suggest about understanding illicit use?

6. Be aware of changing patterns of attitudes towards drug use. What relationship exists between attitudes towards drug use and actual drug use?

7. What are the major exceptions to general drug trends?
