Pipeline to Local Office

The Institute will hold “Pipeline to Local Office,” a two-evening campaign training program, on Thursday, Jan. 29 and Monday, Feb. 2, 2009. The workshop is designed for women interested in running for municipal offices as well as those interested in volunteering on a campaign.

More than 50 percent of past participants have gone on to win seats as mayors, city council and school board members. Among successful candidates in past year’s classes were O'Fallon Mayor Donna Morrow, University City Councilmember Lynn Ricci, Clayton School Board member Rashda "Sonny" Buttar, and Parkway School Board member Dee Mogerman.

Women who have held local office or have worked on successful local campaigns will comprise the faculty of the workshop. They will provide specific instruction on how to develop a campaign plan and budget for a local race, target likely voters, raise money and get voters to the polls. Participants also will learn communication skills and practice public speaking.

As term limits cause more women to leave the state legislature, getting women in the political pipeline is increasingly important, said Dayna Stock, the Institute’s manager. “Running for local office is a great way for women to prepare themselves for a seat in the General Assembly,” Stock said.
