First Weeks Checklist

1. Attend orientation in the Millennium Student Center – Monday, August 12 – Wednesday, August 14

Meet other students, register for classes, learn about UMSL and your visa status, tour St. Louis, go shopping, and more. Orientation is required for all new F-1 and J-1 students. We take attendance at every session.

2. Get your MetroLink pass and/or parking pass – during orientation

UMSL students receive a free pass to ride on MetroLink trains and buses. You will receive the pass on the first day of orientation. If you have a car, you can get a free parking pass in the Cashier’s office after you register for classes. For more info, call 314-516-5151 or umslcash@umsl.edu

3. Get your Triton One ID card – during orientation

You will receive your card during orientation. You use your ID card to access campus dining, use the libraries, access Mark Twain fitness and athletics events, charge Bookstore purchases to your student account, enter the residence halls, and check-in for appointments with advisors.

4. Look up SSO ID & password – by Tuesday, August 13

Go to umsl.edu/cashiers. In the “How do I” box, click “Sign on to MyView.” You use your SSO ID to access your student bill, email, grades, online courses, and more. Learn more at the orientation Technology Working Session.

5. Set up your student email account – by Tuesday, August 13

Visit umsl.edu/technology/tsc/email.html to active your account.

6. Register for classes with your academic advisor – on Thursday, August 15

You will register for classes on Thursday, August 15 in the Millennium Student Center. To see available courses, go to myview.umsl.edu and click on Schedule of Classes.

7. Buy your textbooks – after you register for classes on Thursday, August 15

Go to the UMSL Bookstore in the Millennium Student Center. To compare prices for books sold at the bookstore vs. by online vendors, use compare.umslbookstore.com/

8. Take the math placement exam – August 10, 13, or 19 (only if you want to take math this semester or if your advisor recommends it)

The dates will be posted soon on umsl.edu/~campustesting/testdates.html, where you can also find practice tests. Testing times include Saturday August 10 at 8 am, Tuesday August late afternoon, and Monday August 19 in the late afternoon. All sessions are in room 126 SSB. Please bring photo ID and pencils.

9. Set up emergency notification system - recommended first week at UMSL, but possible anytime

Enter your contact info to receive a call or text when there is a tornado or other emergency. For instructions, visit safety.umsl.edu/police/notification/

10. Attend your first day of class – Monday, August 19

To see the semester calendar, go to bulletin.umsl.edu/ and click on “Academic Calendar”

11. Pay your tuition at the Cashiers Office – first monthly payment due September 1

To avoid extra charges, pay the full amount. For more info, go to the Cashiers Office or umsl.edu/cashiers or email umslcash@umsl.edu

12. Pay your health insurance bill – by Friday, August 30

Pay exactly $618 in the Cashiers Office.

13. Enroll your dependents in health insurance – by Friday, August 30 (only for spouse/child in the US)

Enroll at umsl.edu/services/intelstu/admittedstudents/insurance.html. For questions, email Jennifer Amatya at amatyaj@umsl.edu.

14. Submit missing documents to ISS if you were provisionally admitted – as soon as possible

At orientation, check your nametag to see if you are missing any documents. Bring these documents to ISS. You cannot register for the second semester if you do not turn in these documents.

15. Complete your health record – as soon as possible

If you did not submit the Immunization & TB Screening documents in your admissions packet, contact the University Health, Wellness, and Counseling Services at health_services@umsl.edu. You must complete your immunization record to register for second semester classes.

16. Begin transfer credit process – as soon as possible (process can take two months)

If you would like to transfer credit from another school into UMSL, submit course descriptions and final, official transcripts to ISS. For info, visit umsl.edu/services/intelstu/currentstudents/transfer_credit.html

17. Create Aetna student health account – anytime (recommended)

Track your bills, look up doctors and check prices at aetnastudenthealth.com

18. Get a social security number – after you get an on-campus job

If you have an on-campus job, come to ISS to request a Social Security letter. For instructions, visit umsl.edu/services/intelstu/currentstudents/Forms.html

19. Purchase a meal plan – anytime, if you choose to

If you would like to use your ID card to purchase food in campus dining, sign up for a meal plan. See umsl.edu/services/reslife/current/meal-plans.html. To enroll, email umslreslife@umsl.edu

20. Give access to your family or others to see your student records or pay your student bill – anytime, if you choose to

If your parents or another person will pay your tuition, you can allow them to access your account through MyView. For instructions, visit umsl.edu/cashiers. In the “How do I” box, choose “Set up an authorized payer” or “Grant Additional Authorized Access.”

 

New Student Checklist

Welcome to UMSL! Follow this checklist as you make your plans. For more information about each step, read the other documents in this package.

1. Confirm acceptance of your admission offer

Now that you are admitted, we would like to know if you will attend! Send the Admission Acceptance form to the address at the bottom of the page or submit online at www.umsl.edu/international (Admitted Students section).This form is required.

2. Apply for a student visa / change your status

If you are outside of the U.S., you need to apply for a student visa after you receive your I-20. Read the document titled Visa Procedures.

If you are currently in the U.S. and need to change your visa status to F-1 or J-1, contact us for more information.

If you are transferring to UMSL from a college/university in the U.S., send in the Transfer Student Form. Read the document Transfer in SEVIS for more information.

3. Make housing arrangements

You can live on campus or off campus. If you plan to live on campus, make your reservations early because space is limited. You must register for on-campus housing before you arrive in St. Louis. Read the enclosed housing brochures or contact umslreslife@umsl.edu for more information.

4. Plan your arrival

You must arrive before Monday, August 12, 2013 (the first day of orientation).

If you will live on campus, we recommend you arrive in St. Louis on Friday, August 9, 2013 or Saturday, August 10, 2013. If you will live off-campus, we recommend you arrive earlier to set up your apartment.

Remember you cannot enter the country more than 30 days before the program start date on your I-20 or DS-2019.

5. Complete the immunization requirements & learn about health insurance

Follow the instructions on the UMSL Immunization & TB Screening Requirements document. This form is mandatory. For questions, contact the University Health Center at health_services@umsl.edu.

6. Make a temporary housing reservation

If you will arrive before your room or apartment is available, reserve a room in temporary housing. Space is limited, so reserve a room several weeks before you arrive on campus. Make your request online at www.umsl.edu/~umslconf/form_guest.html.

7. Request an airport pick-up – by July 25, 2013

If you will live on campus, a staff person or student can drive you from the airport to your on-campus housing. To use this service, you must arrive in St. Louis between Wednesday, August 7, 2013 and Sunday, August 11, 2013.  

To request this service, submit your arrival information on www.umsl.edu/international (Admitted Students section) or send us the Airport Pick-up Request form.

8. Get on the plane and arrive in St. Louis!

Carry your original documents with you as you travel: passport, I-20 or DS-2019, SEVIS fee payment receipt, and proof of financial support. Do not put them in your checked baggage. It is also a good idea to make at least two copies of these documents: one copy to leave with your family or friends before you depart and one copy for you.

9. Attend Orientation – August 12–15, 2013

Orientation starts on Monday, August 12, 2013, where you will officially check-in. You will have the opportunity to meet other students, register for classes, learn about UMSL and your visa status, tour St. Louis, go shopping, and much more. Orientation registration begins at 8:30am.

Orientation is required for all new F-1 and J-1 students. You need to bring your passport, I-94 card, I-20 or DS-2019 and local St. Louis address with you on the first day.

10. First Day of Classes – August 19, 2013

You will register for classes during orientation. Have a wonderful first day!
