Should I attend?
-If you are an F-1 student graduating this spring and want to apply for OPT, you must attend one of these sessions.
-If you are an F-1 student graduating this summer, you may attend one of these sessions or a later session to be scheduled in May.
-Any interested F-1 student may attend to learn more, even if you are not graduating.
-If you have previously applied for pre-completion OPT you are still required to attend an OPT information session in your last semester if you plan to apply for post-completion OPT.
What will I learn?
The information sessions cover how to file the OPT application, tips for a successful OPT experience, and the regulations that apply to F-1 students on OPT. There’s time for questions, too.
What is the timeline?
After ISSS processes your OPT application, you will send your application to U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS). USCIS can take up to 90 days to process your application. Based on recent applications, the current USCIS processing time is 60-80 days. There is no guarantee that your application will be processed this quickly.
It is important to apply early so you can receive your full work authorization time. Applications processed at the end of the semester may not receive a full 12 months of post-completion OPT. Apply early to avoid delays, especially if you have developing job offers.
Timeline for Spring 2013 Graduates
- April 19, 2013 - Last day to submit OPT applications to ISSS
- February 17, 2013 - Earliest date USCIS can accept your application
Timeline for Summer 2013 Graduates
- July 5, 2013 - Last day to submit OPT applications to ISSS
- May 12, 2013 - Earliest date USCIS can accept your application
What if I want to apply for pre-completion OPT?
If you are interested in applying for pre-completion OPT (OPT during your academic program), please contact the ISSS front desk at 314-516-5229 to schedule an appointment with an advisor. Consider the 90-day processing time as you decide when to file your OPT application. You will not be able to begin employment until you have received your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and the start date printed on it has arrived.
