Named Scholarships for 2007-2008

Returning students Pierre Laclede Honors College Scholarships Awarding Information for 2007-2008

To apply: Fill out application form and submit a typed statement on why you think you should be awarded the scholarship(s). Please keep your statement under 2 pages, and be sure to include any community work, volunteer, relevant employment experience, major, career plans. Priority Deadline: statements are due April 1st, 2007.

Chancellors Council Scholarship

History: This fund was established in 1992 by the Chancellor’s Council under the leadership of Chancellor Blanche M. Touhill.   It has been added to from time to time by the Chancellor’s Councils and by gifts from individual members of the Council.  

Number of awardees: Varies.  

Criteria for decision: Students who have shown academic leadership at the Honors College and demonstrate financial need.  

Amount of Award: $1000/year- scholarship is renewable.

American Association of University Women Scholarship

History: These scholarships are funded by annual gifts from members of the Ballwin-Chesterfield chapter of the AAUW.   Besides the financial award, members of the AAUW invite holders to social occasions and provide helpful guidance.

Number of awardees: Varies

Criteria for decision:  A female Honors undergraduate student, out of high school at least ten years, who has demonstrated financial need, student must have a FAFSA on file with UMSL. She should have shown scholarly work and have a minimum of a 3.2 GPA. The scholarship must be used for tuition and/or books.  

Amount of Award: varies from $500 year to $1000 a year, scholarship is renewable.

Scholarship in Memory of Julie and Robin Kerry

History:  In memory of her daughters Robin and Julie Kerry, Ginny Kerry established this scholarship.

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Honors College students who will be sophomores and who are committed to their education, work on a part-time basis, and are in good standing within the honors college. Students should be sophomores when they receive the scholarship- apply as a freshmen.

Amount of award: $500/year – scholarship is not renewable, new awardee each year.

May Company Honors Scholars Endowed Scholarship Fund

History:  This is our largest endowed fund and was first established by the May Company Foundation in 1993.   The Foundation wanted to encourage the development of an economically and socially diverse student body and to support students who were residents of the City of St. Louis.   

Number of awardees: Varies. 

Criteria for decision: Honors College students or new students accepted into the honors college with academic promise and financial need. Applicants must meet at least one of the following two criteria:  minority status and/or residence in the city of St. Louis. Intended primarily for new freshmen.  

Amount of award: $2,000/year.  Scholarship is renewable. This scholarship may impact your Honors College scholarship - total Honors College merit scholarship money will not exceed $3,000.

International Studies Scholarship (scholarship is not open this year)

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Honors college student, following the Honors curriculum and in good standing. Student must be studying a foreign language with a modern emphasis.

Amount of award: $1000/year - scholarship is renewable.

Harriett Woods Scholarship  

History: This fund was established by a generous gift from the Honorable Harriett Woods, the first woman to be elected Lt. Governor of Missouri. Ms. Woods has since added to the capital, income from which is used to support women students who demonstrate academic promise and leadership potential. 

Number of awardees: varies according to income, but always at least one.

Criteria for decision: Honors college female student, following the Honors curriculum and in good standing. The College and Ms. Woods consider applicants’ academic records. In addition, each applicant must supply a biographical statement detailing her leadership experience and ambitions. 

Amount of award: Varies but possibly up to $1,500/year–possible chance to renew, but the scholarship is competitive each year.

Dennis R. Bohnenkamp Scholarship

History:  The Bohnenkamp fund was established at the time of Associate Dean Dennis Bohnenkamp’s retirement by the Pierre Laclede Honors College alumni chapter, and donations have come from former students and UMSL faculty and staff.    Further donations came as memorials after Dennis’s death in 2006.   At his wish, the scholarship is intended to support the study of the humanities.     

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision:  Honors college student, following the Honors Curriculum and be in good standing. Must have at least 50 credit hours (including at least 24 at UM-St. Louis), preference to those with 90 or more, and their record must demonstrate achievement in the humanities (can include the fine arts).  Applicants need not be humanities majors, and must provide an application essay explaining their commitment to and enjoyment of the humanities.   

Amount of award: $500 Fall semester only – scholarship is not renewable, new awardee each year.

Engineering Alumni Scholarship

Number of awardees:  1

Criteria for decision: Honors college student, following the engineering Honors curriculum and in good standing.

Amount of award:  $1000/year, not renewable.

Robert and Paulette Bliss Study Abroad Scholarship

History: Established in 1998, this scholarship is intended to encourage students to undertake exchange study at a foreign university or institute.   

Number of awardees: one per year.

Criteria for decision: This scholarship is open only to Honors College students studying abroad under the auspices of the UM-St. Louis Center for International Studies.  Students apply directly to the Center, NOT to the Honors College, and the decision is made by the Center for International Studies.  

Amount of award: Varies but is at least $750.   

 

Pierre Laclede Honors College Excellence in Writing Contest Awards

History:  In 1999, the College instituted a writing program under the directorship of Nancy Gleason.   To mark the occasion and to encourage students in their writing, the college established the Excellence in Writing Awards.   
Number of awardees:  One each for each class level (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 and Fiction).    

Criteria for decision:   Faculty teaching honors seminars will nominate essays, and/or students may submit an essay for the award.  Essays will be considered by a committee chaired by the Director of Writing.   

Amount of award: $50 + names published and article featured in Bellerive.

J. F. Fausz Academic Achievement Award (non-application award)

History: named after "Dean Fred", the first dean of the Honors College, this award is made to honor students whose superior academic performance places them in the top 10% (by GPA) of continuing honors students for the academic year.  
Number of Awardees: Varies per year - top 10% of the Honors College.

Criteria for Decision: The students must be in the top 10% of GPAs for the school year 2006-2007. It should be the GPA for all year (ay) (i.e. a student would receive a Fausz scholarship for 2006-2007 based on their cumulative GPA for 2005-2006). Also, the student must be full time and have no delayed, excused*, or withdrawn grades.
(*only if the excused grade(s) brings you below 12 hours).

Amount of Award: Varies, $250-$500 one time fall award.
