| The Gateway Writing Project (GWP) is the official St. Louis site of the National Writing Project. Since 1978, GWP has sponsored a variety of workshops, conferences, and credit courses based on the premise that teachers of writing must write and must see themselves as writers. The institute brings together strong teachers of writing (all levels, K-college) who will: | |
| Write revise, and prepare their own writing for in-house publication. | |
| Study current theory/research, especially research by teachers of writing. | |
| Demonstrate their most successful teaching practices. | |
Under the sponsorship of GWP, graduates of the summer institute may conduct workshops and school in-service programs in the future. They may also assume leadership roles for improving writing in their own school settings. Course expectations include: |
|
| Portfolio of essays, creative writing, and other work in varied genres. | |
| Demonstration workshop that shares a successful approach to teaching. | |
| Reading response journal. | |
| Inquiry project (small-scale action research). | |
| Participation in study groups | |
| Time and opportunity to think, talk, read, and write about best practices in the company of peers. | |
| Through the institute, you will earn six hours of either English or Education graduate credit. The cost of the credit will be at the UM-St. Louis summer graduate credit rate. Pending grant funding for 2012, a $700 stipend will be awarded to successful candidates who apply by Feb. 15. Later applicants may or may not be eligible for stipends. There is also an expectation that summer fellows will attend three “renewal” meetings during the 2012-2013 school year. The dates and times for those meetings will be determined by the group. |
|
| Fees will be charged at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Summer 2012 rate. | |
